that can make you feel MORE like a horrible writer than getting your edits back? Even if it's minor stuff like comma placement, you stare at the marks going 'wow I suck.'

Okay sometimes you feel bad when you start at naming books for an hour and still have nothing you like or you gave up for 5 rounds of bejeweled blitz or something but I can usually get on track.

I get the edits and it's like waaaah I suck. I don't. And usually the edits aren't horrible. I do them. the work is better. I am happy but still, that initial time period just after the edits are opened is harsh.

I know just how you feel. My Whiskey Creek Press editor marked Storm Chaser up so much that I was surprised they even bought it, even though most of the mistakes were cosmetic.

It's scary isn't? I thought that exact same thing when Dreamspinner Press bought In the Hands of Gods but that, like the one i'm dealing with now, were just cosmetic issues. still it's like gah I suck

It just means we've sunk into our stories so much that our minds skim over mistakes -- after all, we know what we "meant" to say!

You don't suck. Sometimes you write faster than your fingers can follow.

there is that. I love that you and [livejournal.com profile] bob_fish are not in agreement about where my commas belong and when the hell did the hyphen become a substitute for a comma?

hahahahahaahahahahahaha about the commas.

It depends on what you're using the hyphen for? I use it to set apart stuff.

H. and E from my English dept have been talknig about how it's completely replacing the comma in some places but i don't get the rule nor do I like the looks of it just jammed in there

yeah, I'd use a hyphen to set things apart, specifically during a conversation or thought process piece.

someone's already nailed me on the whole Hughes now need's an apostrophe S to show possession, graphically, in a story where EVERYONE's name ended in a damn S
