Another weekend of me running around trying to catch my own tail so I'm going to just drop the snip and run. Still working on These Haunted Brendan is still talking to his ex

“My god, you actually went in? Is that safe?” Her green eyes were wide.

“Nope, not in the least. I was afraid I’d end up in the basement at any moment or crushed from above but damn if Josh isn’t fearless.”

“Tell me about him. You’re sure he’s on the level?” Heather reached across the table putting her hand over his. “You’re safe with him?”

Hell no he wasn’t safe. He was losing himself to Josh. Being in danger never felt so good.

I am drowning in work so I'm just jumping into this.

Still snipping from These Haunted Hills

Brendan is now in Columbus waiting for his ex-wife, Heather, to arrive.

She waved to him, got herself one of those sugary confection coffees she loved so much before coming over to hug him. Heather sat down with him, smiling. “I can’t believe it but it looks like the country agrees with you. You look....I don’t know, lighter than I’ve seen you in years. Tired yes but good.”

He smiled faintly. “Had a hard night but yeah, I have to say, this research trip has been nothing like I imagined. I wanted to get a story but I’m getting more than I bargained for. And you look great too, hon.”

She did. God she was beautiful in love. They’d been college sweethearts. He’d seen her through terrible times and seeing her now bright and shiny as she’d been that night in the Tau Kappa Epsilon house party, Brendan couldn’t help but smile. Their time in love was over and he felt no jealousy over her finding love again. She was happy and if anything, their son would never have wanted them to be too sad to live on.

I missed last week and nearly missed this one, it's the start of the semester which is always brutal.

I'll dive right back into These Haunted Hills It's picking up after Brendan ran back to Columbus after a b it of a break down with Josh. It's been a while since we've seen her but Heather is his ex-wife with whom Brendan is still friends (and I changed her name since we last saw her) It's been a long this time just to capture the moment.

Pulling into the lot for his favorite coffee shop, Brendan glanced around. Heather’s car wasn’t here yet but she would come like he asked. He ordered the largest cappuccino they offered and a chocolate zucchini muffin - he’d been good in the Hocking Hills, not too many sweets and he’d been walking. He wouldn’t want to get paunchy. He’d look pregnant what with his little frame. What he wouldn’t give to at least have shoulders like Josh did. Finding a seat, Brendan pulled out his cell phone.

I’ll be back tomorrow. I still want to go to the hotel with the team. He grimaced slightly as he sent the text. People mocked him for not using text speak and texting full sentences but he couldn’t help it. Anything else made him cringe. Josh texted back with a single thumb’s up emoji. Oh well, he couldn’t have everything but really an emoji? Of course, his brother was in the habit of randomly sending him poop emojis for the hell of it.

A second text came in. Will have everything ready. Hope U R OK. Call if you need anything.

Oh how tempting that was text speak aside. He probably would call Josh tonight. Whatever this was between them, this thing he had battered and bruised in the last twenty four hours needed nurturing. Even a quick call would probably do it. He considered calling that very moment but was saved from his neediness by Heather’s arrival.

Sliding in last minute again. I've been hiding from social media in light of everything but it's been good for me finally finishing the rough draft of my overdue research paper. I got it done and need to let it sit and marinate before I tear it to shreds.

Picking up with These Haunted Hills again. Last week we saw the aftermath of Brendan's emotional meltdown from Josh's pov. This week we're in Brendan's head.

Brendan almost hadn’t been able to go into his house once he got into Dublin. He was terrified that he’d go in and see Connor there. Josh and his friends had really gotten to him. He had gotten into this mess because he thought Connor was trapped in his home. Now he felt that fear more keenly.

He’d been grateful that his psychiatrist had a cancelation and could make time for him today. Brendan hated running out on Josh like that. What must he think?

He seemed understanding the night before but this had to seem like fleeing to Josh. Brendan felt oddly uncomfortable with saying I need to see my shrink. No, not odd. He worried Josh would think that he couldn’t handle the intimacy and ran away to seek help. Of course, that was exactly what it was but it would hurt Josh and Brendan knew it.

And yikes forgot to put this here for like a month

Converting my muscle practical to an online version is just killing me. So without any more preamble here's more of These Haunted Hills picking up with them still talking about Brendan's emotional breakdown post losing/finding his pendant. Vince, John and Kiyomi are characters in Brendan's bestselling YA book. Connor was his son.

“Can I tell you about Connor’s last day?”

A tight band worked around Josh’s chest. This was so intimate and frightening he wasn’t sure he should hear it but he couldn’t say no. “Of course.”

“Luckily we were able to keep most of it out of the news which wasn’t easy. They can be vultures.”

“I’m sure.”

“He died on his birthday,” Brendan said, low and flat, hiding himself away from his own emotions. “He wanted Vince, Kiyomi and John to be at his party, such as it was in the hospital. The actors were happy to show up for this in costume. They talked and played with Connor. He had a ball. He cried a little, wishing their magic could make him feel better. Heather and I tried so hard not to lose it right then and there. Connor wanted a picture with all three of them. He kissed them on the cheek and climbed into my lap.

“He said, Daddy, this was the best birthday ever and I hope he really believed that. He kissed Heather and I then curled up against my shoulder and said, I love you, to us. He shut his eyes and Connor slipped away not more than five minutes later.”

Brendan’s voice broke, his chest heaving. Josh held him tighter. “I’m so sorry, Brendan.”

The good news is I won Nano and I DID finish These Haunted Hills. Now begins the laborious process of editing this into something that's not a ball of nonsense. The bad new is they flipped us online for the last 3 weeks of class which at least I was prepared for except for the lab final. Sigh.

Here is more of These Haunted Hills picking up after Brendan's emotional break down.

“Do you want to talk? I don’t....I’m not sure what to do next. I might not be what you need tonight.” Joshua grimaced hating himself for that admission.

“You have no idea how much I need you. You, in just the short time I’ve known you, have made me feel lighter, happier than I have in years, just by being you.”

Josh gasped, his eyes pricking with moisture. “Brendan.”

Brendan squeezed Josh’s hand. “I mean that. You are a great friend. You’re funny and you’re smart. You were all the things I prize and now you’re here listening to me bawl.”

“You need a friend right now.”

I've been working nano hard, pretty much should cross over to 40K tonight and I'm splitting it between two projects one of them being These Haunted Hills which I should finish if not tonight by Monday. I'm also getting highly anxious that we'll get locked down by this time next week and I'll have to race to get my finals online. I suspect (and will act accordingly) that we won't be face to face in the spring semester which both sucks and might be a bit of a relief. However, internet here is so unreliable we'll lose a ton of students with no access. (if there is anything we need it's good internet. We're so disadvantaged here)

And since this is what I'm working on have a little more of These Haunted Hills. Brendan has broken down telling Josh the truth about his pendant and is thinking about his lost son.

Brendan came back, his face washed, and sat down with Josh. “Can you stay with me a while?”

“I can stay as long as you need me to.” Josh had hoped to spend the night in a much more pleasant way but Brendan needed him tonight. Josh felt as shaky inside as Brendan was on the outside. He’d never seen a man so vulnerable and he wasn’t sure he was up to the task of helping him. He wanted to be but he’d not lost anyone close to him. His grandfather died when he was young but he barely remembered any of it. Other than that, he’d been lucky.

Ugh it's midterms and I'm still sitting here with tooth pain so I'll just drop this snippet and run.

Continuing on with These Haunted Hill Brendan is having a massive panic attack about losing his pendant and Josh just found it in his truck. It's longer than 7 sentences but it completes the thought

Brendan whipped around so fast, he slammed a shoulder into the porch. He toppled with a cry. Josh raced over, dropping into a crouch next to him. He put a hand on Brendan’s sweating shoulder. It bled a little from where it kissed the wooden porch.

“What’s wrong? It’s just a necklace.”

Brendan snagged it from Josh’s hand, shaking so hard he nearly dropped it. He put it around his neck without comment. His trembling fingers brushed the glass, lingering over the metallic blue swirl of glass inside the pendant. “It’s Connor.”

“I don’t understand.” Josh sat on the edge of the porch.

“It’s part of his ashes. They make them into glass art.” He closed his fingers around it. “I can’t lose this. I can’t lose part of my son.” Brendan wept a few tears then they came as a torrent.

Josh caught his breath. He slipped an arm around Brendan’s back. “I didn’t know.”

Brendan shook his head. “His mother and I did different things with Connor’s ashes. I wanted just a tiny part of him to keep with me always.”

Running late on everything between online teaching fires, deadlines, midterms, hiking and breaking a tooth. SIgh. I will catch up.

Moving on with These Haunted Hills Just as they were getting close, Brendan freaked out over his necklace.

Josh put a hand on Brendan’s shoulder only to get it batted away. “Look around here on the floor. I’ll go check the truck.”

Josh raced out to his vehicle, flinging open the door. He checked the floorboard. He found the glass pendant on the floor under the seat. He turned to run back to the cabin only to see Brendan on his hands and knees looking under the stairs to the porch. “I have it!” he called.

October, my favorite month. This is Halloween has been running on a loop in my head. I've been out hiking as much as I can with all the lovely leaf change. It is helping me forget some of the crap in the world if only for a little while.

I'm going back to These Haunted Hills which I'm finishing for nano if it kills me. Brendan and Josh are done ghost hunting for the day. They're back at Brendan's cabin, ready to get a little naked for the first time (reminder, since it's been since forever, Green Tablet is Brendan's bestselling YA series and he always has a glass pendant on that he uses almost as a worry stone)

He eased Brendan back then caught the edges of his own shirt, pulling it up over his head. “Maybe a little fun in the shower first, get the tick repellant off of us,” he said, figuring out no good way to make that sounds sexy.

Brendan snorted then pulled off his own shirt. He had the Green Tablet symbol tattooed over his heart but along it was something resembling an oscilloscope. Brendan tossed the shirt aside running a hand over his chest then his eyes popped open wide. Panic flashed across his face as he looked at his chest.

“My necklace!” he cried. “Oh god, I lost it. I can’t have lost it.” Brendan all but fell next to his shirt, shaking it hard. “It’s gone. It can’t be gone. Where is it?”

“Brendan,” Josh started then flinched as Brendan turned on him, face white as marble.

He jammed his fingers along his waist band checking to see if the necklace had lodged there. “What if I lost it in those fucking woods? I have to go back there now.” His voice cracked, going shrill.

I found out my asthma had gotten FAR worse than I thought, like I'm functioning only 70% of my lung capacity. Hopefully the new meds will help. On the good news side, if nothing else, Cassadaga Nights had one heck of a release blitz and I think it's doing pretty good. I think this might be my last snippet from it.

For context, Santino and Cam are doing their morning yoga. Santino messed up a pose and has toppled over.

“What are you doing?” Cam shot him the gimlet eye, holding her grasshopper perfectly.

He grimaced but admitted the truth. “Thinking about Ryan.”

“And your erection off balanced you?” She smirked, flowing into child’s pose.

“Cam!”

Blurb : Santino Bellomi and his coworker, Cam, are sent to Cassadaga, Florida by the Aspida Pneuma, a group of psychics and mages. Their job is to rescue a nixie from a polluted lake and to check out the town, which is known for its psychics. New recruits to the Aspida are always welcome and where better than a spiritualist camp to hunt for them? What Santino wants most, however, is to finish the assignment quickly. He isn’t a fan of heat and humidity, and he’d looking forward to a well-earned vacation once the mission is over.

Ryan Doyle grew up in Cassadaga, where being psychic runs in the family. Ryan has never roamed far from home, though it’s hard being a geeky gay, wannabe urban fantasy author living in a small town. His job as one of the town psychics is fairly routine until he meets someone new. Ryan has never encountered anyone with a psychic shield so strong until Santino sits down for a reading. Intrigued, he asks Santino out even though Santino is as secretive as he is fun.

Santino hopes to win Ryan over both for himself and for the Aspida. And he’s hoping his skills in the kitchen will swing the balance in his favor. Ryan has almost given up on finding love, living in rural Florida. Can a seductive tourist be the answer to his dreams?

Things never run smoothly for those in the Aspida. What should have been a simple rescue mission is plagued by mosquitoes, enraged ghosts, and someone or something draining residents of their life force. Ryan’s first foray into adventure may be his last.

I tried to forget the sadness of RBG's death by going out into the woods because it was a beautiful day. Everyone had that idea. Literally no place to park, I saw at least 100 people just in the parking area, no makes. I found a slightly better spot but it was still so crowded it wasn't fun. Sigh. I'll try again tomorrow elsewhere.

I have more of my new paranormal romance release, Cassadaga Nights

“Santino, I have something for you.”

“Is this a dirty call? I’m not alone.” He chuckled.

“Well, I was going to say meet me, but not for sexy times, regrettably.” God, did Ryan regret that. “Someone has, in theory, summoned a spirit that’s roaming the town, and JayEllen, another paranormal investigator, asked me to look into it. Want to come to the Cassadaga Cemetery with me?”

“How could I turn down such a weird date?

I'm so overworked and brain dead I thought my release was yesterday for Cassadaga Nights (I did a count down and everything.) It's Monday. Head desk. Also sitting here looking at the west coast with such dread and sadness.

So I'llbe continuing with my paranormal novella Cassadaga Nights. Have I mentioned that I used to live in the psychic commune of Cassadaga for a few years? It is an odd, fun little place. I'm continuing on with Ryan's first sighting of Santino at a psychic reading. Lisa is Ryan's mentee in how to do readings.

Would it be ethical to break into Lisa’s reading if she wasn’t having trouble and hurry her along because Ryan really wanted to take this man’s hand? Touch governed his ability to read someone, visions sometimes coming to him when he didn’t want them. Sometimes knowing people too well by merely touching them, or something they valued, could be heartbreaking. It didn’t stop Ryan from wanting to hold this man’s hand. Watch it be one of the times his powers gave him diddly-squat.

I can't believe how fast my release date is coming up on this. I can't believe how busy I am. The other anatomy prof has emergency surgery this week so I'm teaching her classes and mine. I'm going to be exhausted.

I'm back with my upcoming release Cassadaga Nights. You met Ryan last week. This week you get to meet Santino and his partner, Cam and they are just a bit unusual. Also I'm pretty excited to have been asked for a sequel for this so I need to start thinking of more trouble to put them into.

“Where the hell is the garlic?”

“Knowing you, it’s everywhere.”

Santino glared over his shoulder at his partner, Cam, who sat at the kitchen table watching him cook. “You like garlic.”
He concentrated on the braid of bulbs on the counter. It wiggled, then flew over to his hand.

“I do. And not walking to get the garlic is lazy,” she singsonged.

He yanked two cloves out of the head and hit them with the flat of his knife. “You know what our mentor says— The best way to improve your skills is to use them.”

“You ran around your parents’ house saying ‘I can use the Force!’ when you were a kid, didn’t you?” Cam cocked her head to the side. “Probably still do.”

Santino held up two fingers and his thumb, making a pinching motion. “I find your lack of faith disturbing,” he intoned.

I'm finally in a position to snippet from my upcoming paranormal novella Cassadaga Night. I used to live in Cassadaga, FL which has in it a psychic center and that features heavily in this. Also Natasha Snow did an amazing job on the cover.

Ryan drew his shield over himself, letting his psychic senses dampen down. All day, most days, he dropped his armor, walking around exposed, vulnerable on all sides to the flood of stimuli. Such was the life of a professional psychic. He was unable to cut himself off when he was on the job. His clients depended on his abilities. While he could cold read a person to give Houdini a run for his money, Ryan was the real deal when it came to being psychic.

I'm watching it rain and rain. Also I wanted to start sharing from the novella this week but I still don't have the buy links so next week whether or not I have them. I also have some arcs of it and could send them to reviewers but I never know how to approach a reviewer. Anyone have some tips?

Anyhow, here is a little more of These Haunted Hills instead of the novella.

Wrapping his arms around Brendan, Josh kissed his way down the man’s bearded neck, breathing in the warm musky scent of him, marred by the remains of bug spray they were both coated in. He broke off because he could taste the hints of repellant. Great, now wasn’t the best time to think of that. A shower beforehand was hardly foreplay, unless of course they did it together. Yeah Brendan’s shower was miniscule but maybe he’d suggest it. A bath might be their best bet.
A drive by posting. I'm in the middle of the proof edits for my upcoming novella and hopefully by next week I'll have some pre-order links and can share it. Other than work's a dumpster fire and I've had time for nothing.

More of These Haunted Hills. They finally made it home.

Brendan’s hand shook slightly as he unlocked the door. He yanked Josh in after him, slamming the door shut before pushing Josh against it. His mouth was more than demanding this time. He devoured Josh who wondered if Brendan was afraid he’d lose his nerve. Belatedly it occurred to Josh that there was probably nothing resembling a lubricant in the cabin. Brendan hadn’t come here expecting a night of passion. Josh had a couple condoms in his wallet for all the good that was going to do him.

Screeching in late. I was working all day and then went to another virtual Abney Park concert which was a blast. It's like being front row with no strangers bumping into you and you can dance if you want to without people complaining.

Still working on These Haunted Hills Josh and Brendan are leaving the haunted hotel after getting spooked.

“Is that thing following us?” Brendan peered in the rear view mirror.

“Does it feel like you’re being followed? I stopped feeling the pressure once we got in the truck.”

“Me too but I wasn’t sure if it could hide.” Brendan scowled. “Conversations I never thought I’d be having. My characters yes, me no.”

“We can talk about other things but make them not too distracting because if I have to pull this truck over.”

Brendan snorted. “I can imagine TMZ right now, guess what world famous author got caught with his pants down in the hills of Appalachia.”

“I’ll get my fifteen seconds of fame....until my students see. I don’t know if they’d be scandalized or jealous or both.”

“I’d go with both.” Brendan nudged Josh. “Drive faster.”

“Any faster and we’ll be the next ghosts to haunt these hills.” Josh protested but tromped on the accelerator. Trucks weren’t exactly made for speed on curvy roads but at least he was used to driving the back country roads.

Taking a day off of recording lectures to 'attend' Comic Con (because I rather like it this way, not having to be too near too many people. on the other hand, I miss vendors and cosplay)

I have a release date for my novella in Sept. so pretty soon I'll be snippeting from that but until then, let me continue with These Haunted Hills

“I did just invite you back to the cabin. I’m pretty sure it wasn’t so we could go over the ghost tapes.” Brendan smiled. “It’s not like this is a first date.

“That’s true but on the other hand we haven’t actually gone out on a real date.”

“Wandering the country looking for ghosts counts.”

Josh wondered what the fuck he was doing trying to talk himself out of sex with Brendan. Had the ghost possessed him? Was he an idiot? No, he didn’t want to do anything Brendan would regret. “Works for me.” He belted in and pulled back onto the road.

Still running on the ragged edge thanks to the complications of making online classes in a completely updated system that is entirely different than its previous version.

I'm picking up where I left off last week. WIth them in the aftermath of their first kiss at the haunted hotel.

Brendan leaned over the center console and kissed him again. “Let’s go back to my place. I don’t know what I was thinking out there but the overgrown jungle of the terror hotel is hardly a romantic setting. Besides, anything more than a kiss and we’d probably have ticks somewhere utterly inappropriate.”

Josh wagged his head, running a finger under his eye to catch some stray moisture. “I know some really think that the outdoors, forest sex looks romantic but to me, there is absolutely nothing sexy about twigs and bark and insects all over your nether regions and did I say sex? Oh my god, I said sex. I went from a first kiss to sex in one breath. I still can’t talk right around you.”
