In all honesty, my week in writing can be boiled down to a handful of paragraphs on a steampunk short story and the beginning of a new idea. Writing time has been spent cleaning house and packing for the holidays.

So why bother posting at all? Because I wanted to share the reviews of Once Upon a Time in the Weird West. Let's call it an ego moment. It was an exciting project for me and I'm so glad I got to be part of it because for a while I thought I might not be (because damn you story for being overly long).

Surfacing (The Ariel Series, #2)Surfacing by A.L. Bates

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Surfacing is the sequel to Deep and it would definitely be better if that is read before this. Surfacing is relatively stand alone but still, it assumes you know the characters. It picks up not long after Deep and the crew is ready to surface from the waters where they mine and salvage and take some shore leave while they monetize their cargo.

Joel, the captain and Sean, the doctor, are still in the early days of their relationship which is a bit of a bumpy one. Joel has always considered himself straight until Sean and Sean's past contains a ton of sexual abuse (including being sold by his father and older brother) and framed for certain crimes.

Just as they are ready to take the next step in their relationship when everything falls apart. As if one crew member close to Joel turning up with a problem pregnancy that she might lose wasn't enough, Sean's past catches up to him. His elder brother has found him and worse blames Sean for everything bad that has happened to him as a result of Sean's fleeing the family. He can make it all go away if he returns Sean back to his abusers.

Joel isn't about to let this happen but Sean's instincts are to protect Joel and the ship from his brother. The question is will he survive the consequences of those instincts?

I enjoyed this novella though I occasionally wonder if Sean has the patience of a saint as Joel is a prickly captain and they both have a habit of jumping to conclusions. The world building in this is very interesting, and different, especially with the deep sea nature of the ship. It is, however, on the dark side (which I am a fan of). Sean and Joel are interesting characters and I'm glad of the time I spent with them.

I received an ARC from the publisher in exchange for a review which in no way influenced this review.

My short story, The Light of Winter, is published with Dreamspinner Press as part of their 2014 Advent Calendar. It was my first attempt at contemporary fiction (which is not my usual genre at all). I'm very pleased that it's being well received.

Blurb - Dr. Gareth Evans and his medical doctor partner, Warun Jones, are having trouble making time for each other between end of term craziness for Gareth and holiday-related injuries pouring into the hospital for Warun. Gareth has planned what he hopes will be the perfect recipe for relieving the tension and bringing them back together. While Warun wants Gareth to partake in Plygain, a traditional dawn service of hymn singing for Christmas, Gareth plans to take Warun to Bryn Celli Ddu and introduce him to the Druid ritual of Alban Arthan, the celebration of the winter solstice. buy it here

Excerpt - Warun unbuttoned the top of his jacket as the afternoon sun grew slightly warmer. Maybe it was all the walking. He would have to thank Gareth more profusely when they returned to the hotel. This trip was exactly what they needed. The gap that had been opening between them sealed shut as they explored Penmon Priory and then Beaumaris Castle. They were both history nuts. They’d met for the first time as historical explorers at the Dyfi Furnace, a mid-eighteenth-century iron ore smelting factory, back near their current home in Aberystwyth. Gareth could be trusted to find different things to do for dates, like their second date to the sunken forest in Borth, just a few miles outside of town.

And here's the phallic column mentioned in the story. It's inside the Bryn Celli Ddu monument.

My steampunk novella, If Two of Them Are Dead earned another another 4 star review That makes me very happy. This was one that I struggled with in spots and the editor pushed me hard, rightly so. I am so proud of how it turned out and people seem to like it. And that makes me happier still.

AND I'm giving away a signed copy of Kept Tears This one is very special to me. I've talked about it many times. Aaron is a disabled veteran. Rhys is a fae prince with far too many secrets. If you haven't had a look at it, now's your chance.

And boy was it a needed one. It's been a rough two weeks, with me sick for ten of those fourteen days and the day job and the edit this now stuff colliding like an 18 wheeler meeting a train. I'm anxiously waiting for March when I can breathe again after all the deadlines are gone.

But into every darkness, light must shine and here is my light. Kept Tears got two more four star reviews. How happy am I? Here, check them out for yourself:

It is such a relief to me that at least some people are really enjoying my story. I mean, I know I loved it. I know my first reads enjoyed it but to get it out there away from me and my friends, and still have people like it, that makes it all worth it.

Now I'm going to hold onto that thought and wade back into the edits for my next piece.

But it is. It's those little things that make us smile. I try to stay away from GR reviews but I'm a masochist some times. However, if I had stayed away I would have missed this link to this really nice review. It's always good to see someone enjoy my story. I know I can't please everyone and I've gotten good about not letting that bother me (and if you comment to just bash the genre I wrote in as opposed to my actual story, I'm just going to laugh at you). However, knowing that my story made someone happy, makes it worth it to me.

That said, I better get my lazy bones back into writer mode. I'm going to finish this year's nano novel if it kills me (aiming for 60K+ by the holiday)

I got my first rating on The Darkest Midnight in December (Points to icon) and it was a four star. Yes that made me dance just a little bit. It's not my first four star (in fact my author's page on Amazon looks pretty stunning really) but this is the longest piece I've done on my own and I admit it; Temple, Caleb, Agni & Li are very close to my heart.

It's a nice little boost and I could use it. While I do have all sorts of new characters rolling around in my mind, nothing much is gelling. I really need to finish up the Scarred Soldier story. I lost a bit of steam on that which is so disappointing. I need to get in the right frame of mind. It's less depression or lack of interest than me being buried up to my peepers in work.

So I was thinking of doing something fun like interviewing Temple, Caleb, Agni and Li and posting the results here. So if you think of some questions you want to ask, drop them off here.

a great review for Two Tickets to Paradise What else is there to say? This is just a great review for the whole anthology and she took the time to review each of the stories. I couldn't be more happy to read what she had to say about Haunted. I'm looking forward to getting my chance to read more of this.

It's been a horrible writing week otherwise. Not that I lack motivation but right now I need Hermione's time turner. I'm just drowning in work.

I did take time off with friends to go to the winery. I needed to relax and I made friends with a mastiff. She's a lovely thing who wanted to sit in my lap.
