the woods dark and deep
May. 9th, 2011 10:24 pmor you know, not so deep. Lake Katherine's woods aren't so deep but the path is little more than a muddy rut so you can almost pretend to be in the forest primeval. As I was hiking along Salt Fork trail, I was thinking anyone writing a medival/fantasy woodland/Native America/Colonial setting ought to go hike in the woods at least once.
Even on this well established path there are tons of hazards. It was very muddy this time due to all the rain. There are roots thrusting up at you. There are rocks, uneven ground, slick mosses and underbrush. Pine cones and acorns there to remove your stable footing. There are times when you have to stop and actually chose your footing before you put your weight on it.
Yet when you see it written and/or on the screen, people are jogging merrily along like they were running track. I've worked a woodland ultra marathon. sprained/fractured joints were common. I would like just once to see the woods depicted as they should be (okay I'll buy elves have a natural affinity for it and move better). The only time we see someone fall is when it's either the female protagonist just in time to give the bad guys time to catch her and make her suffer before she's rescued or if it's the weaker female character you know is gonna die.
I'm a big fan of the woods and gardening. I love the image of a rock supporting a tree.

just look at that hefty tree being supported by the thinnest of soil collecting in the cracks of solid rock. To me it says never give in, never give up. With just the tiniest bit of support we CAN do anything we want. This is why you see me use these sorts of images a lot (it is my goodreads icon after all, one like this from Hocking HIlls). Never give in, never give up, be a tree.
