I admit it. I hang out at goodreads and take full advantage of the giveaways. As a result I see a lot of books and a fair chunk of them are erotica both het and gay.

Far too many books erotica or otherwise, end up having some of the cheesiest blurbs ever. If I can not tell exactly what your book is even about, that is a failure of a blurb. When it comes to the romances/erotica, some of them are down right painful, bodice ripper over the top 'steaminess'

Maybe I'm in the wrong field. That just doesn't appeal to me.

Then comes the cover art, a main part of marketing. SOme of these covers are so...well still 1970's bodice rippers. I'm assuming this must sell. They've been part and parcel for so long. They also do not appeal to me.

The end result is I end up buying a lot less in my own field than I probably should. It's a curious thing. I'd rather have a more sedate cover and a blurb that didn't promise me scorching hot kisses or whatever the heck it is they're promising. I'd rather know about the plot. I'm already assuming there'll be hotness involved.

The blurbs for erotica usually make me laugh and the covers make me wince. That's bad.

that's my same reaction. It makes me feel a little guilty which isn't good either. I've been lucky with Dreamspinner since usually the blurbs have been a little less uh over the top shall we say?

And we have some say over our blurb which is better

That is a very, very good thing, indeed.
