I'm hanging with Behind Blue Eyes (thanks for those who seemed to like the title). Aneurin has been forced to take Kaleo to a party. I wanted to show where one of the Toymakers tries to reclaim Kaleo because he's obviously hasn't had his will broken and isn't subservient enough but honestly, couldn't find a passage that made much sense in just 6 (or 7 or 8) sentences. But did find this. Verlio is the Toymaker and this bit introduces the other subplot's danger. (Note: the inducer Verlio is taking about is an implanted pain inducer used to control the Toys) And yes, it does have one extra sentence because I can't finish a thought in six apparently.
“I do hope the embarrassing way your Toy carries himself has nothing to do with the reason you didn't stay long,” Verlio said, fishing a wand out of his pocket. “My controller can synch with any of the inducers. I can bring him to heel.”
“Don't you dare.” Aneurin caught the man's wrist, spinning him away. As they moved, he heard a high pitched whine, and fire lanced across his forearm. Verlio shrieked, his hand disintegrating.
Another laser blast hit right next to where Aneurin had been standing but Kaleo yanked him away, dragging him around the corner of a serving counter laden with drink and food.
