I'm going back to my last NaNo novel pathetically titled Behind Blue Eyes (because I had to call the file name something!). It's SF. For context, Kaleo was born in a prison slum. This galaxy puts its worse criminals in a prison city (think Escape from New York). Kaleo was born there. He thinks he's signed up for a program of indentured servitude that after a few years will earn him a citizen ID chip and he'll be free (as he's done no crime). Instead he's been basically kidnapped by Toymakers who use the young people born in the slums (and the poor citizens who are out of options) as sex slaves. The wealthy people who buy the Toys think they are willing courtesans trading sex for being kept in great surroundings with all their needs cared for. The reality is after a year or more of being mentally broken down and trained to accommodate almost any fetish, the now-docile Toys face a life at the mercy of their masters/mistresses and their own altered bodies (ramped up endocrine systems, hyper sexual states induced by pin point neural alterations. It's not exactly a romance (but eventually will have a HEA/HFN ending)


In this scene, Aneurin is taking Kaleo home on his personal shuttle and they're doing the awkward getting to know you talk.



“Doctor, if you don’t want me, put me out the airlock now. Please.” Kaleo’s voice trembled and broke, his shivering becoming more pronounced. “Don’t send me back to them.”

“Aneurin,” he replied and at Kaleo’s quizzical look. “My name is Aneurin. You may use it, Kaleo. I’ve never been one to be called by my title, and I’m not going to shove you out the airlock. I’m also not going to give you back to them, especially not without investigating this more.”

I think 'Behind Blue Eyes' is a fab title. Poor Kaleo. He really did get a raw deal. I hope Aneurin takes care of him well.

I like the title. It's intriguing.

I'm definitely down for a not-a-romance with a HEA/HFN ending. This world has me curious. It's an interesting concept. Poor Kaleo.

It'll definitely have romantic subplots but yeah I wouldn't call it a traditional romance. I'm glad you like this universe.

Sounds like maybe the training didn't quite "take" with Kaleo.

(As an aside, the name Aneurin makes me think of "aneurysm." But maybe I'm just weird.)

Thanks CJane. Kaleo has had a hard, terrible life but that's all about to change.
