100 Things #75 - That little sting
Feb. 11th, 2014 10:10 pmGetting a short story rejected happens more often than not. That doesn't mean it doesn't sting a little because it always does.
The Welsh short story was rejected for the Not Shakespeare anthology. Naturally I'm disappointed because that could have been a fun one to be in. That said, I'm not all that surprised.
It's not that it wasn't my best work. I liked the story (or I wouldn't have sent it in) but it was my first attempt at contemporary fiction. I said it at the time, it was probably my first and last time. I feel pretty strongly about that now. I don't think it's my strong suit.
So what happens now? I could just hang onto it and hope for other anthologies but I think I'm going to dissect it, maybe age the characters up a bit or add in a third character (though that might be problematic) and either make this urban fantasy or mystery and shoot for a longer story and use the cannibalized parts of this because I loved the setting and the characters.
We'll see. Nothing is going to happen immediately unless I get a stroke of genius. I have several other projects.
