For the Fallen
May. 26th, 2014 12:06 pmTerrible Minds had a flash fiction challenge here and since it is Memorial Day weekend, I chose to do a drabble for Aaron from my novel Kept Tears. While I've been doing drabbles for at least a decade if not longer, they never get easier.
For the Fallen
The stump of Aaron’s arm throbbed viciously. His throat tightened until breathing became a worry. Rhys waited for him back home, understanding his lover needed to do this alone.
Shane patted Aaron’s shoulder. “Ready?”
He nodded, not trusting his voice. Shane handed Aaron some little flags they had brought to the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies. Their Wound Warrior group had been given a portion of the graves to care for.
As they snapped a salute to the fallen, Aaron’s arm twinged again. He had nearly been one of them. For once, the loss of an arm seemed like luck.
And if you'd like to celebrate Memorial Day with a bit of generosity, the Wounded Warrior Project is a great program.
