read in order to write
Jun. 29th, 2010 10:47 amMost of the pros tell you that and I can not argue it (though I've certainly seen wannabe authors try. I've never been sure why anyone would want to write if they hate to read)
I was reading Anne Perry's new book set in Constantinople The Sheen in the Silk (though I have set it aside for the moment. Mom wanted to read it more.) And thought to myself this is how I want to describe. Oh, I probably never will but I want to. Description used to come easily to me then I found myself in a writers' group that took me a long time to realize was truly a poisonous place to be. They broke me of ever describing anything after about two years of constant ridicule.
I'm working on building that back up. Perry's books are a good one to look at and see what I want to do. Maybe a little less, it took a long time to chew through 40 pages because it was so dense. However, reading it helped me over a block with my masquerade story. It really needed that level of sensual description. Now to get it done before time runs out. Yikes.
19. Favorite minor that decided to shove himself into the spotlight and why!
This one is easy. Temple Chevalier in Snowbound. It was supposed to be Caleb's story but Temple just stole it right out from under him. My first readers wanted more more more of Temple and so far the few reviews I've seen think Temple is the point of view character. what a brat.
