Rule of Three- Savio in Danger

If you're looking for part one of my Rule of Three saga, here you go. Rule of 3 part one, Oriana’s point of view

Part 2 -

Savio in Danger

His mother hadn’t wanted him to go to the Kastanes. It wasn’t that Oriana didn’t like Caron, but she worried. His swelling jaw suggested that Savio should have listened to the information his mother had gathered. Savio swept his foot out, taking down one of the attackers. The man’s head cracked off the rocks outside the cavern’s mouth. One of the men slashed out with a knife. Savio barely sidestepped in time, catching his attacker’s arm, flipping him.

A fist nearly grazed his cheek on his blind side as Caron joined the fray. She smashed another attacker’s nose, taking him down. Savio grinned at her. He loved many things about her, but the fact that she wasn’t about to stand by, watching her man fight and waiting to be rescued, topped the list. Her head whipped side to side, scanning for further threats, her blond hair sticking to her sweating neck.

“What's all this about?” She kicked the man who had the knife.

“Likely Barnes’s men. Mother said he thinks you’re Fata and he wants you,” Savio grumbled, stripping the knife-wielder’s belt off to tie the man's hands.

Caron snorted. “Fool, as if I would gift him anything if I had Fata magic. Are there-”

A gunshot cut her short. Dirt kicked up at their feet. She grabbed Savio’s hand, yanking him inside as another shot rang out. They plunged into the cool darkness of the Kastanes.

“Damn, they’re trying to kill me.” Why did that happen so often? His shoulder throbbed, reminding him of how close he came to losing his life on a trade run recently.

“Hard for another man to claim me as if I were a prize with you in the way,” Caron spat.

“You have a light, don’t you? We need to put some distance between us and them.”

Caron flashed a feral grin in the dim light filtering in from the cave’s mouth. “You know I do. No one knows these caves better.”

Savio knew that. Her affinity for these hills and the caverns beneath them was the reason some people believed she was one of the legendary woodland beings known as the Fata. He had never seen anything otherworldly about her other than her ability to memorize the vast underground spaces.

Caron moved some rocks and came up with two flashlights. “I have supplies and more lights peppered about down below.”

“Let’s hurry. Before the shooter comes.”

Caron stopped him, shaking her head. “Not down Heriot's Pass. Everyone knows that way. I can get us back to the city, if that’s what you want, using a passage almost no one knows, or we can hide in the caves for a while.”

“If you think it’s safe, we can hide here, then make our way back.”

“They won’t be able to follow me.”

Caron led him to the wall and a half-moon opening near the floor. Putting the flashlight in her mouth, she slithered forward. Wincing when his arm tried to bear his weight as he followed her down, Savio snaked after her. For a moment, he was convinced he’d get stuck, but after a short slide that left his shirt damp, they ended up in a bigger tunnel.

Without a flashlight, no one could follow them. No natural light reached this deep and nothing, not even Fata, could see in true darkness. Finally, they rested by an underground lake.

“Soon, I won’t be able to crawl through here for a while,” she said.

“Why?”

“I’m pregnant.”

Savio nearly crashed his head into a stalactite as he whipped around. “What?”

I really love the changes you made to this. It's a more coherent story.

You're welcome!

Well, that does complicate things! Like a strong female character too.

Couldn't leave a comment last week - thanks for changing whatever you changed :-) Can you please add your word count?

Thank you. I knew I forgot something. It's fixed.

Actually I didn't do a thing. I've noticed that the 'post anonymously' function doesn't work reliably on any blog service. As I try to use it for the Platform Campaign & Rule of Three, sometimes I can and sometimes I can't comment. Frustrating. I'm just glad it's working now.

Thank you very much. It definitely complicates things and I'm thrilled to have come up with a strong female character.

Ooo, exciting!

Dang it, I missed the bump up to 600 words. I cut mine down from 596 because I thought it ran too long (and since it still works, it probably did need it, but still...).

thank you very much.

yeah I could have kissed someone for that. This wouldn't have been half as good if I needed to shave another 100 words off

Enjoyed reading this a lot. Haha, indeed things are going to get complicated from there.

thanks very much. Indeed they will.

Definitely things are becoming more complicated and I love it. I'm also enjoying Caron's voice, and looking forward to you maybe using her perspective with part three!

thank you very much. Yes, it's definitely Caron's turn at bat. I'm looking forward to hearing what she has to say myself.

Poor Savio, that revelation in the end surely came as a surprise to him :)

I hope they'll get away safely.

Will Caron be your main-character for part 3?

Savio is still a blithering idiot thanks to that announcement.

yes Caron will be.
