Rule of Three - Caron has a Plan
If you're looking for part one of my Rule of Three saga, here you go. Rule of 3 part one, Oriana’s point of view
If you're looking for part two of my Rule of Three saga, here you go. Rule of 3 part two, Savio in Danger
Savio was so cute when he was flustered. Caron nearly had to fish him out of the cave lake after her announcement. Occasionally mumbling something semi-coherent about babies, he followed her through the tight squeezes of the caverns as they headed for a more secretive place to surface, hopefully away from their attackers. At one point, once her news properly soaked into his hard head, Savio had stopped her, kissing her hard as they pressed against slick flowstone. Afterwards, he started worrying about what his mother might do to him for accidentally making her a grandmother.
The light blinded her when they finally surfaced. Caron knew her lover had it worse with his solitary eye. She remembered the day he returned from the military, broken, unable to even look at her with what he considered a ‘ruined’ face. Caron thought he was going to turn her away, but they got through it. Some rich bastard wasn’t going to tear her from Savio now. Caron shoved thoughts of losing Savio from her mind, trying to concentrate on her surroundings. If they got distracted now, they might get killed before they made it back into Renaissance proper.
When they got to the Barking Spider, they saw one of the front windows had been busted out and boards had been nailed across. Caron’s throat constricted as she fumbled for Savio’s hand. If something happened to his mother because someone had come looking for her, Caron didn’t know how she’d deal with that. Once inside the restaurant-bar, it was impossible to tell anything had happened. There were barely any tables open. Oriana was in her usual spot behind the bar, her mussed hair the only hint something might have happened.
Caron hesitated. For some reason, Oriana frightened her more than guns-for-hire. The woman knew too many secrets. She let Savio tug her up to the bar. Oriana and her assistant barmaid continued pouring drinks.
“What happened to the window, Mom?”
Oriana waved him off. “One of Barnes’s men came looking for you and went out the hard way. Where have you been? They mean to take Caron to his estate one way or the other.”
Caron chuckled and the older woman cocked up an eyebrow. “Sorry, but he’s too late. They tried to shoot Savio. I hid us out in the Kastanes. We’re fine,” she added hurriedly, seeing Oriana’s pupils dilate. “In fact, I think you could help end this, Oriana.”
“Me?”
“Um, Caron, I don’t think this is the time…”
Caron clamped a hand over Savio’s mouth. She had already told him he could hide behind her if his mother took the news as badly as he suspected she might. They agreed the formidable woman wouldn’t hurt a pregnant lady. “He wants me to be his wife and for me to grant him even more power and whatever other magic he thinks I have, right?”
“That sums it up,” Oriana nodded.
“You gather information. It’s time to leak some. Let everyone know I’m pregnant and marrying your son.”
“Marry?” Savio squeaked and Caron glared.
“What did you do, son?” Oriana roared and he winced.
“Hey, you were only fifteen when you found yourself in this same situation,” Savio protested weakly.
Caron considered leaving him to his mother’s tender mercies. Oriana came around the bar and hugged Caron. She booted her son. Only then did Caron notice the barmaid was gone and the front door was slightly ajar. She’d point out the possible mole to Oriana once she was done turning her son to paste. Hopefully, Caron’s news would derail the threat against her.
Prompts used: the impending misfortune foreshadowed in the 1st prompt comes to pass, but one or more characters laugh at it; Betrayal is in the air; Relationships unravel or strengthen.
