Say hello to Layla. And I want to apologize for not having time to pretty up the links. My internet is hanging on by a thread and I didn't want to take the time only to find out it's dead again. So without further delay, let's hear from Layla!

Thank you for inviting me to your blog and helping to celebrate the release of Serpent’s Kiss, my fifth full length novel release. I must say, the journey into authorship has been an interesting one. I’ve talked in the past about how I got started, playing online roleplaying games and building a storyline and longtime characters into what became Guitars and Cages and the upcoming sequel Guitars and Choices, but I have to say that nothing could have ever prepared me for what being an author truly entailed. Let me say I was in for a bit of a shock that I’m still recovering from in some ways. So without further ado, here’s my list of the 5 things I didn’t know about becoming a published author but wish I had.

1. That I’d spend as much time learning to promote and build a brand as I would getting to write new stories.
2. That people will write reviews on a novel based only on the cover and sample chapter, and you can’t say a word, you just have to sit back and ignore it, or better still, learn not to read them.
3. That it isn’t what you write but how you write it, telling a story isn’t the same as creating a world and inviting readers to live in it for a few hours.
4. That your editor is your friend, you’re beta readers can become your biggest support group, and more than just getting words in the document goes into polishing something. There are many parts and people involved in getting a work out there and each and every one of them should be celebrated.
5. That there would be days when actual writing would have to be set aside for social media. I didn’t even have a twitter account when I wrote the first book, in fact, I wasn’t entirely certain what twitter was, or tumblr or pinterest, and I certainly didn’t have a website. I’ve learned so much about social meeting since my first release, and it’s been truly humbling to have to go to my daughter for assistance more often than not.

Serpent’s Kiss Excerpt

He caught sight of his mismatched eyes in the mirror as he headed to the living room, desperate to put the day behind him. As always, seeing those eyes reminded him of how defective he really was, and not just on the outside, but the inside too. His green eye was blind, save for those moments when it decided to peer into the soul of another and bring their future or past roaring like a waterfall of images through his mind.

The twisted part of him, the cold, sick, sadistic nature that set him apart as much as his stare, loved when those images spelled out pain, misfortune, and death, death was a high that left him without the need for drugs or the bottle gods. What kind of monster fed off the hurt of others the way vampires fed off blood, hell, he was worse than any bloodsucker, at least they spared their victims pain when they could, left them with pleasant, sometimes even erotic memories and licked the wound closed to hide where it had been. Him, he just busted lives open wide, sucking in all that delicious fear, doubt, paranoia, oh god but he loved when he got the paranoid ones, he’d fuck with them for days before allowing the visions to play out the way they were supposed to. Drop them a little hint here, a little clue there, let them know disaster was breathing down their necks and watch as they scrambled to do everything in their power to avoid it. Only there was never anything that they could do.

He was caught between self-loathing and longing for just the right kind of paranoid son of a bitch that might help him forget this day when his eyes landed on his couch. Sitting where he’d planned to drop his ass and rest was a woman with blood diamond scales running down her arms and the brightest ruby eyes he’d ever seen. Crimson lips parted to reveal a pair of brilliant white fangs and her hair was the color of sunsets, all red and orange hues spilling down her back. A pattern of scales ran up her forehead like a widow’s peak, and covered her cheekbones. Her ears were mere slits set against the silver and red prismatic colors and when she turned, he was sure he heard rattling and looked down to see a snake’s tail coiled on his plush leather cushions.

“What. The. Fuck,” he stammered, wishing he hadn’t taken off his gun.

She hissed, like lips peeled back, forked tongue darting out and flickering in his direction kind of hiss and he shrank back, ‘cause however messed up he was, she was way on the other side of normal.

“Your crass words are offensive to my ears,” she seethed, coils uncoiling and snaking toward him.

He took another step back, ‘til the backs of his legs hit the front of a chair and he dropped his ass in the lumpy thing.

“Apologize,” she ordered.

He opened his mouth to tell her to go to hell, but all that came out was a choked wheeze as something squeezed his throat so hard he was seeing red spots and haze.

“You were told to apologize,” a deeper, harsher voice ordered, and Darrell forced himself to focus, to grasp the coils around his neck and pull at the thick weight of them enough to catch a gasp of air.

Serpent’s Kiss Blurb
While searching for their missing sibling, Zaiden and his sister, Kaandhal come across the last pure blooded psy-clairvoyant of their kind. Unfortunately for them, Darian has no idea what he truly is and isn’t much interested in learning, or in helping them locate their brother, Zxex.

A bounty hunter by trade, who’s been all but banished from his family due to his visions, Darian’s a bit cynical about his ability to be of any assistance to them. Never-the-less, Zaiden brings him back to their home Rhumba, where Darian discovers that very little is what it seems.

With plots unfolding all around them and discoveries about his own heritage leaving Darian reeling, he is left with the choice of whether to embrace who and what he is, or spend every moment with them a prisoner on the fringes of their society.

Add in a pesky little bond that only seems to grow the more time he and Zaiden spend together, and several factions looking to gain possession of him and Darian is left wondering if his visions just might be the least of his troubles.

LAYLA DORINE lives among the sprawling prairies of Midwestern America, in a house with more cats than people. She loves hiking, fishing, swimming, martial arts, camping out, photography, cooking, and dabbling with several artistic mediums. Hard times, troubled times, the lives of her characters are never easy, but then what life is? The story is in the struggle, the journey, the triumphs and the falls. She writes about artists, musicians, loners, drifters, dreamers, hippies, bikers, truckers, hunters and all the other folks that she’s met and fallen in love with over the years. Sometimes she writes urban romance and sometimes its aliens crash landing near a roadside bar. Taking Shield 04 : The Chains Of Their Sins

PUBLICATION DATE : 13 February 2017

About the Taking Shield series

Earth’s a dead planet, dark for thousands of years; lost for so long no one even knows where the solar system is. Her last known colony, Albion, has grown to be regional galactic power in its own right. But its drive to expand and found colonies of its own has threatened an alien race, the Maess, against whom Albion is now fighting a last-ditch battle for survival in a war that’s dragged on for generations.

Taking Shield charts the missions and adventures of Shield Captain Bennet, scion of a prominent military family. Against the demands of his family’s ‘triple goddess’ of Duty, Honour and Service, is set Bennet’s relationships with lovers and family. When the series opens, Bennet is at odds with his long term partner, Joss, who wants him out of the military and back in an academic, archaeological career. He’s estranged from his father, Caeden, who is the commander of Fleet’s First Flotilla. Events of the first book, in which he is sent to his father’s ship to carry out an infiltration mission behind Maess lines, improve his relationship with Caeden, but bring with them the catalyst that will destroy the one with Joss: one Fleet Lieutenant Flynn, who, over the course of the series, develops into Bennet’s main love interest.

Over the Taking Shield story arc, Bennet will see the extremes to which humanity’s enemies, and his own people, will go to win the war. Some days he isn’t able to tell friend from foe. Some days he doubts everything, including himself, as he strives to ensure Albion’s victory. And some days he isn’t sure, any longer, what victory looks like.

(2nd place winner, Rainbow Awards 2016)

About The Chains of Their Sins

Shield Captain Bennet arrives on the Gyrfalcon to take up his final year's posting before returning to the Shield Regiment after his rotation out.

On the Gyrfalcon he faces up to the fallout from Makepeace—ethical, political and above all, personal. Will he be able to accept necessity: that knowing what the Maess are up to outweighs the humanitarian issues surrounding the prisoners he rescued from Makepeace? Can he ride out the political furore that follows the loss of the dreadnought Caliban? How will he cope with an entire year of serving under his father, Caeden? And worst of all, how in the name of every god in the Pantheon can he stand to see Flynn every single day, with the Fraternisation Regs standing between them and keeping them apart?

It will be an interesting year. Bennet can hardly wait for it to be over. Of course, things never really do go to plan...

Excerpt

More Hornets were out of the tubes, racing to catch up; almost everyone, now. Bennet had the Patroklus squadron on visual, little points of light on his left, speeding towards him. He held the Starboard and Port wings in position, waiting for Patroklus to join him, listening to the continuous stream of inter-ship Comms that gave him the intel he needed on everyone's position. Captain Sergei reported he was in position.

“Heads up, boys and girls,” Bennet said over the command line. “Bandits will be here in two minutes. Battlecode comm transmissions only.”

All chatter stopped. Everything around him fell silent. It took him a second to realise that the dull muffled thumping that he felt as much as heard, was his own quickening heartbeat. His eyes never stopped moving—to port, ahead, the scanner, to port, ahead, to starboard, ahead, the scanner, ahead, to port…

His gaze flickered to port-side most. His pilots were out there, tackling the outriders to the first wave of fighters. Nothing much to see. The fighters were drones, with no internal atmospheres to give even the briefest flash of light and heat when they were destroyed. If he saw a flash, it would be one of their own.

Port, ahead, the scanner, port, ahead, starboard…

“All advance bandits accounted for,” Kyle said. “No survivors.”

“Casualties?”

“None. Clean strike.”

“Good. Stand by.” Look to port, ahead, the scanner, ahead, to starboard, ahead, the scanner, ahead… “Kyle, you have their left flank. Sergei, their right. Starboard Wing, we're punching right through these guys to take on the second wave.”

“Yes!” The excitement in Kyle’s voice was unmistakable.

“Ready.” Sergei was more subdued.

“We're ready,” Cruz said, steady as ever. “We're all ready.”

Bennet took a split-second to watch them get into position, the usual cold clenching around his guts, knowing they wouldn't all come back. He had the fighters on visual now, a close-packed phalanx of ships, blotting out stars. There had to be more than a hundred of them, with a second wave of at least another hundred, maybe more, behind. A full complement of a battleship's fighters all stacked up against the little Hornets.

Bennet opened his private comline to the Gyrfalcon. “Ten seconds, bridge. We're going in.” He only half-heard Quist's acknowledgement. He'd already keyed into the battle code comline. A deep breath. “All Attack Wings, intercept attackers and engage the enemy. Go!”
Five seconds later the front ranks of Hornets and fighters smacked right into each other.

Can't tell you how excited I am for this anthology!

* photo IMG_1513_zpssmebr8dj.jpg (The hills around Virginia City)

You can find out why I set my story in Virginia City at my post for the blog tour here . I had so much fun writing a steampunk story that I really went overboard with it and had to trim it up (who knows, one day the longer version might make an appearance). In Corpse Powder you have a Jewish doctor, a Navajo airship man and an evil wizard and no end of troubles.

The Territorial Enterprise even made it into the story (though I had to cut the part about Mark Twain for length, pouts) * photo IMG_1508_zpskdnxtlyj.jpg

Anthology Blurb This isn’t the same old Wild West. The usual suspects are all present: cowboys, outlaws, and sheriffs. There’s plenty of dust, tumbleweeds, horses, and cattle on the range, but there are also magical gems, automatons, elementals, airships… even dinosaurs and genetically modified insects. Roaming among the buffalo and coyotes, you’ll encounter skinwalkers, mad engineers, mythical beings cloaked in darkness, and lovers who stay true to their oaths… even beyond the grave. On this frontier are those at the mercy of their own elaborate devices as well as men whose control of time and space provides a present-day vision of the West. There might even be a dragon hidden amongst the ghost towns and wagon trains.

If you like your Westerns with a splash of magic, a touch of steampunk, and plenty of passionate romance between men, these genre-bending tales will exceed expectations.

Hold on to your hats, cowboys and cowgirls. The West is about to get weird, and you’re in for a hell of a ride.

Blurb for Corpse Powder : Doctor Isaac Adler came to Virginia City, Nevada, to escape the horrors he witnessed during the War between the States. Despite a living in a thriving Jewish community, Isaac’s having trouble finding his faith… and finding work. Just when he’s contemplating leaving the desert, life takes an unexpected turn when the airship Aurora is attacked by pirates and Isaac is called upon to help the wounded.

The ship’s first mate, Tsela “Alexander” Zhani, is also trying to outrun a nightmare, his in the form of the powerful skinwalker who drove him from his Navajo village. Tsela’s friendship with the handsome doctor responsible for saving the lives of his friends gives both men a fragile hope for a better future. But their demons aren’t as far behind them as they thought.

Love Wins is the second anthology Dreamspinner has put out to benefit the victims of the Pulse shooting victims in Orlando and I'm proud to be part of this anthology. It's a mix of genres from contemporary to Sci-Fi to urban fantasy which mine is.

My story, More Than His Scars, is an urban fantasy short story with my Kept Tears characters, Aaron a disabled veteran and Rhys, a Tylwyth Teg prince. Rhys and Corrine (Aaron's best friend) along with Rhys' 200 year old twin sons are trying to help Aaron through the anniversary of losing his arm.

I loved being able to revisit Aaron and Rhys's world. I love writing those two and I wanted to deal with all that Aaron has lost and what he has gained with Rhys.

You can Buy it here with Dreamspinner or here with Amazon.

front-coverThe 2016 Queer Sci Fi Flash Fiction anthology, "Flight", is here, and I have a story in it! It's a really cool concept:

A 300-word story should be easy, right? Many of our entrants say it’s the hardest thing they’ve ever written.

Queer Sci Fi's Annual Flash Fiction Contest challenges authors to write a complete LGBTQ speculative fiction micro-story on a specific theme. "Flight" leaves much for the authors to interpret—winged creatures, flight and space vehicles, or fleeing from dire circumstances.

Some astonishing stories were submitted—from horrific, bloodcurdling pieces to sweet, contemplative ones—and all LGBTQ speculative fiction. The stories in this anthology include AI’s and angels, winged lions and wayward aliens. Smart, snappy slice of life pieces written for entertainment or for social commentary. Join us for brief and often surprising trips into 110 speculative fiction authors’ minds.

The book us available in eBook form (4.99), and will soon be available in paperback with b/w illustrations inside (12.99) and in a special collector's edition with color illustrations (24.99).

Excerpt Like Falling: Moriarty said something about falling being like flying. For an evil genius, he's an idiot. Falling is nothing like flying.

Author Bio:

In the first year of the Queer Sci Fi Flash Fiction contest, we received about 15 entries for the theme “Endings”. In the second year, it was 115 for “Discovery”.
This year, we had more than 170 entries from people around the world, and from all parts of the LGBTIQA rainbow. “Flight” represents 110 of those people and their stories.

Author's Note - My Story is Like Falling and I had fun writing it. I gave you a little taste above. I'm looking forward to getting my own copy and reading them all. I hope you do the same. (And yes, I'll agree with the intro, this IS hard to write. Flash fiction is a challenge.)

Mark’s hands were still shaking. Nate knew from experience Larry kept a bottle of scotch in his desk. He pulled it out and passed it to Mark. After a few mouthfuls, Mark started to sob.

“Sorry,” he said. “Sarah was a friend. I’ve known her for years.” He took another mouthful and replaced the cap. “What now?”

“I don’t know,” Nate said with a sigh. “You okay?”

“Not really. But I guess I’ll be fine. What about you?”

“I’m good.”

“Your face is cut.”

Nate touched his cheek. He was bleeding. He didn’t even remember getting hurt.

“Is there a first aid kit in here?”

Nate pointed to a cabinet and Mark went to retrieve it. He pulled out some antiseptic wipes and dabbed at Nate’s face. Nate tensed. The intimacy was unexpected. It had been a while since someone had touched him so tenderly.

“Does it hurt?” Mark asked.

“No.”

“You’re tense.”

“I’ve been shot at.”

Mark rolled his eyes. “I suppose that’s a good excuse. It’s not too deep. Besides, I hear the ladies love a man with scars.”

Nate glanced away, feeling a flush affect his cheeks.

“Sorry, that was insensitive.”

“It doesn’t matter.”

Excerpt

The faint glow of morning filtered through the curtains. Arsenio noted it with mounting frustration. He’d not slept all night. When Phoebe drifted into slumber a few hours ago, he remained awake, unable to take his eyes off her. He didn’t know what was wrong with him. He was usually gone by now, his mind already on the next conquest. Then again, he’d never brought a woman to his home before, preferring to go to her place so he could leave without difficulty when the time came, to avoid the awkwardness of morning-afters.

Phoebe was different. Something about her called to him; her allure was as much a siren song to him as his was to others. Was she the one he had been waiting for and, if so, what should he do about it? Yes, that was the real question. The whys and wherefores could wait. For now, a deep instinct prompted him to secure her as his own. There was one way to accomplish that. He’d never done it before. He’d never cared enough about any of his sexual partners to warrant such drastic action. Could he do it now?

He glanced down at her sleeping form. She looked so peaceful, her hair wild about her face and her lips slightly parted. He thought back to the moment he’d spotted her in the club. Then he remembered her friend. Ah, yes. Were she to disappear, she would be missed. What was he thinking? Even contemplating running away with her was madness. Better he leave things as they were and pursue her through more moderate means.

FROM THE SNIPPETS I’d heard from the different families I’d stayed with over the years—not that they’d ever cared to share much—a couple of generations ago, due to a steel shortage, most industries started to wane. It was said that it came down to such a degree that all the seeming essentials in life were erased. I was skeptical of that, because as far as I’d noticed, electricity, water, even televisions and cars were still in existence. However, one thing I’d heard from the grandparents of the families was that skies used to be blue instead of cardinal red, trees green and brown instead of khaki or teal, and seas usually blue as well, instead of fandango. The granny who’d told me this said that everything had changed color after the industrialization breakdown; she’d experienced it herself. I believed her, because she was the only one who took the time to speak to me in my youth. Truth be told, though, however dramatic the color change was for her, since I’d lived with the new colors all my years, it didn’t affect me at all. As for other aspects of life, even she said that seventy years after the breakdown, they now were similar to before.

I did, however, know something that might be related to the breakdown. I’d always been afraid to squint when I was young, because whenever I did, all the people I saw changed into different colors. Some were brown, some red, and occasionally some pink. It seemed a bit funny. I didn’t know what that meant. In order not to get confused, I stopped altogether. I’d thought I was just weird that way, until I heard the story about the breakdown. Now I loved to squint. Though I’d yet to learn what colors meant, I did discover how the color change could be useful.

I worked in a pub, Tingo; not that the pub knew about my business. I was a “part time drug dealer”, with part time meaning I helped drug dealers determine who in the pub was in need and from whom the dealers needed to stay away. I never did drugs myself, but I helped out when I was in need of cash. The job was easy. I’d squint my eyes and those in orange would be the ones to approach, instead of those rare yellow ones. It worked every time. From what I’ve heard, many of those yellow ones were undercover cops. The dealers often got caught when I didn’t help.

Away from the occasional “helping-out” in the pub, my real interest there was actually the cute guys. I got great satisfaction from looking at all the hot men, talking to them, and consequently taking them to bed. It wasn’t always easy, as one would know, but it was so much simpler with my “special ability”. My prey would also be orange when I squinted, but a less reddish shade, more like tangerine. When I spotted one I liked, I’d squint my eyes and whisper to myself, and almost to him, “You want to come home with me.” In no more than ten minutes, the man I wanted would magically come to buy me a drink, and we’d later end up at his place or mine, doing what I loved. That, again, worked every time.

Blurb:

Overworked cubicle jockey Adam Byron wants to attend Oregon Coast Pride in style but the price of a room at Buchanan House, a popular gay retreat on the central coast, is beyond his budget. So he won’t miss out, he advertises online for someone to share expenses. Corporate drone Silas Grant responds to Adam’s ad, and the two get to know each other via texts before meeting at the coast. They agree on a no-pressure roommate arrangement, yet once they meet face-to-face their attraction is undeniable. Desire might simmer well beyond Pride weekend, no matter how hard Adam and Silas try to live up to their noncommitment pact.

Excerpt:

Silas
I didn’t lose my nerve, but with how tentative and quiet Adam stayed while I chatted with our hosts and every other guest at the party, I took things slower than I would’ve liked. The last thing I wanted was for him to think I was a player. Maybe he just wasn’t used to being surrounded by a roomful of horny gay men. Or maybe he was naturally quiet in real life. Whatever his reasons, I could respect them, but I wouldn’t be deterred. I would find out what his body looked like, what it felt like against mine, what it tasted like.

And I would ignore the flare of jealousy I felt whenever another man checked out his ass or rested a hand on his arm.

Everyone flirted with everyone else—it’s just the way it worked at parties like that, and it didn’t necessarily mean anything. Except one couple kept eyeing him and whispering. Maybe hoping for a threesome, or foursome. When they started to approach us, after the other guests had left to go gambling or dancing in Lincoln City, I used a ruse to get Adam outside alone. It had worked on me the first time I had drinks at a party, in my sophomore year of high school, and it worked just as well on Adam. If he knew he hadn’t stumbled, he didn’t seem to care. The unquestioning way he let me take him outside had my dick filling before we cleared the porch. I didn’t think I could wait through the sunset, but it was pretty, so I stuck it out.

I wasn’t the only one who felt tortured, a fact that became obvious as soon as I let my arm rest in his lap.

“Do you want another drink?”

He flinched a little when I spoke. Neither of us had said a word for the past hour. Or maybe he startled because I increased the pressure of my arm against his cock at the same time.

“No, thanks. I’m good.”

I don’t doubt that. “How about if we go upstairs?”

He sighed, almost as though he’d been holding his breath and waiting for me to ask. “That sounds good.”

I didn’t really want to let go of him, but, physics. Once we stood and started moving toward the house, things happened fast. Almost fast enough. We raced up the back staircase—there didn’t seem to be time to go through the party room and then the lobby to take the indoor stairs. I pulled him by the hand until we reached the door to our room. Adam’s key was in a pocket without a button closure, so I reached inside and took it. I slipped my left hand back into that pocket while I unlocked the door with my right. Neither operation went quickly or smoothly, but that first handful—the first time I wrapped a hand around his hard cock, even through the fabric of his pocket—was a life-altering experience.

Excerpt “Begging yer pardon, Lieutena’, but I’s brought yer some supper.”

The paintbrush slipped from between Ned’s fingers as he spun around. It struck his boot, leaving a streak of pale pink across the black leather.

“Isaac. What brings you here? Is everything well at home?”

“Yes, sir. Folks be having a marv’lous time. All be singing and dancing. But Cap’n Andre, he takes me aside and says I’s to come bring yer some food.” He verified this fact by holding out a linen-wrapped bundle.

Ned wiped his paint-specked hands on his apron and reached for the proffered parcel. In doing so, his fingers brushed against Isaac’s. The contact made him start and he had to fumble to keep hold of the packet. “Thank you, Isaac.”

“Will yer be needing anything else, Lieutena’?”

The ridiculous urge to invent something gripped Ned. He wanted nothing more than to find a reason to keep Isaac here a little longer. It was so rare for them to be in a room alone together, and he had a fervent desire to prolong the moment. But that was madness. What good would it do to dwell on something that could never be? Besides, he found himself unable to concoct an argument that would necessitate Isaac’s remaining.

“I do not believe so. And I suppose you should be getting back before Mrs. Colley misses you.”
Isaac shook his head. “No, sir. Cap’n Andre, he speaks with Missus Colley, and then he tells me to stay long as yer need me.”

Ned frowned.

“I’s to bring the linen back, too, when yer’s done, sir.”

The tension that had formed across Ned’s brow dissipated at this additional statement. For a moment he had questioned Andre’s motives. Moreover, he’d wondered at how much the man knew... or guessed. But it was clear now that it had merely been Isaac’s style of speech that had led to the confusion. He’d been told to wait for the leftovers. That was all.

First Swallow of Spring
Asta Idonea
16 March 2016
Torquere Press
Short Story/MM

The first swallow of spring draws Seanán back to the fae circle each year. There he dances with the handsome fae lord, Iorweth. He knows the rules he must follow if he wishes to be free to leave at the end of the night; however, Iorweth is growing ever more inventive in his attempts to trick Seanán into breaking them.

Audio Excerpt

Torquere Press Pre-Order Link

Excerpt
“Seanán will be dancing with none but me.” The words were softly spoken, yet the tone brooked no argument, and at this utterance, the others scurried away and a new figure stepped into view.

A wave of contentment flooded through Seanán. “Iorweth.” He accepted Iorweth’s proffered hand, and Iorweth pulled him to his feet as if he weighed nothing. He gazed up at the regal figure. “I have missed you.”

“And I you. Shall we dance?”

Iorweth swept Seanán into his arms and they spun toward the edge of the clearing. The others made room for them and they joined the chain, circling the stone in a dance of pure delight. The music came from no discernible source, but it filled the air, bright and bell-like, and between its magical refrains, the fae laughed, clapped, and cavorted in the moonlight.

Seanán followed Iorweth’s lead. The rest of the world melted away as he lost himself in the fae lord’s glimmering, emerald eyes. This was the time of year he felt most alive. In the long months between these meetings he survived on memories and dreams. They kept him going, but nothing compared to being here in Iorweth’s arms. The press of his hand on Seanán’s back—that was the brilliant reality. The rest of his life was colorless.

Iorweth pulled him closer until their bodies met. Warmth spread through Seanán and he sighed and rested his head against Iorweth’s chest. Surely they had danced for long enough. Surely Iorweth would soon take him to the stone. Yet, on and on they danced. They twirled and dipped and swayed, never breaking from the circle. Seanán should have felt dizzy. At the very least he should have grown weary. But when he was with Iorweth, he always had boundless energy. So long as their hands touched, Seanán believed he could go on dancing without pause, forever.

Excerpt
I had several orders to fill, but I couldn’t concentrate. The potion business didn't pay much, but as it was only a ruse, I didn't care.

Cleaning up other peoples', or in my case other immortals', screw-ups paid a whole lot more. It also took a lot out of me, but, hey, a girl's gotta live, and since selling my body held no appeal, that was my only option. So I made bodies and any traces of magic reckless immortals left behind disappear, and tried to stay out of the line of fire. Of course, working closely with vampires and werewolves didn't make the job easy. On the other hand, I was lucky to be working mostly with their kind. I shuddered to think how much more difficult it would be with demons or fae as customers. Good thing they were used to cleaning their own messes.

Eventually, I gave up pretending to work and went outside. The hot air of the afternoon hit me hard and I breathed it in in long, deep gulps. It tasted foul and oppressing on my tongue, reminding me again how much I hated the heat. Not even the clean mountain air could make it palatable. And no matter how far I was from civilization, I could still feel it around me, smelling like sickness and decay. It was such a far cry from the crisp air of the Otherworld. There everything was sharper, fresher. The forests were always green, and the grass smelled like spring. I shook my head, bringing myself back to reality. What was of the point dreaming of what you couldn't have?

I filled my lungs and the foul smell hit me again. My nose curled in distaste, my stomach convulsing. I dry swallowed, trying to get rid of the awful taste, and cursed myself for dwelling in old memories. That had to be the reason everything seemed worse today.

Sun washed over me as I stepped into the backyard. Closing my eyes, I basked in its glow. As much as I hated summer, I loved the sun. Yet another contrast of my personality. But then again, what would you expect when I was made out of contrasts from the beginning? Fae's blood mixed with human, demon and angel, animal and water; those conflicting elements meant to give me access to all these worlds tended to battle inside me. It didn't work out for my maker as well as he'd hoped, but, as the saying went, you can't have it all.

Devouring Red
Asta Idonea
24 February 2016
Torquere Press
Short Story/MM

Straying from the path on the way to his grandmother's house, Redd is pursued by a vicious, hungry wolf. Help arrives in the form of a mysterious stranger, but will Redd wish he'd taken his chances with the wolf when he comes to learn there is more than one way a handsome young man can be devoured?
Audio Excerpt

Excerpt
Redd crashed through the forest as fast at the trees would let him. The space between their trunks appeared to be shrinking. Were they closing in on him? He put on a burst of speed. Branches stretched toward him, grasping at his clothing with jagged wooden fingers. Twigs and dead leaves cracked and crunched beneath his feet, and his crimson cloak billowed out behind him, flapping in the breeze and brushing over the foliage.

Then one of the trees got lucky. Its slender limb caught on the hem of Redd’s cape and sent him tumbling to the ground. The shock of the fall was enough to snap him out of his panic, and he lay there until his short, sharp breaths steadied to slow and deep inhalations. Once calm, he pushed up onto his elbows and assessed his surroundings.

The woods encircled him, dense and dark. He knew it was still daytime because here and there the sun’s rays penetrated the thick foliage, creating glistening puddles of light that made the reddening leaves shimmer. However, there was a faint bluish tinge to the illumination that told Redd dusk was not far off. The thought of being forced to spend the night in the forest sent a new shudder of fear through him and he scrambled to his feet.

Why had he done it? His whole life he’d been warned about straying from the path and he’d never been tempted to disobey before now. But then he’d never had any incentive until today. His grandmother was sick. Dying. No one had said the word aloud, but Redd had seen it in their faces when they spoke of her illness. Getting weaker, they muttered. Growing frail. Others spoke of the long years she’d enjoyed as if that somehow made up for the inevitable loss. For Redd, there could be no positive to numb the pain.

Callum's Fate Banner

Synopsis

In 1780, Scotland, following a harsh year of drought, Callum Mackenzie is forced from his father’s farm in the hopes of finding work.

But as fate would have it, Callum is lured onto the moors by the will-o-the-wisp. Lost in the dark, he falls into enchantment, encountering faeries and nymphs, until he stumbles into the arms of a licentious Barrow-Wight who lays claim to his soul.

Hearing his silent pleas, Donal sends Liam the gruagach (faery) to rescue Callum and bring him to his farm, a place of refuge from the Fae.

Callum is happy working on Donal’s farm, slowly falling in love with the beautiful, silver-haired gruagach.

Yet there’s something wrong in the nearby forest….

Despite Donal’s warnings, Callum is lured into the forest and becomes tangled in its magic, easy prey for the Barrow-Wight.

Will Liam be able to strike a deal with the Barrow-Wight to save Callum’s life, or has Callum found his last resting place instead?

Excerpt

Mists closed around him and hid the moon in a veil of cold grey. He came to a stumbling halt, fear pounding through him in time to the wild beat of his heart. As he caught his breath, he heard the unmistakable sound of flowing water, perhaps a creek winding through the heather. Callum gnawed his lips. Danger lurked on the water’s edge for an unwary man.

On the other hand, men built homes along the waterways and learned to guard against the faery folk. He sighed. Either choice spelled risk, but hunger and loneliness won out and sent him in search of the water’s path through the thick heath.

The gray fog made it hard to see his way and he cursed when he stepped into the creek before he knew he’d come to it. An icy chill raced up his leg and he glanced around, feeling as if he’d been startled from a dream. The mists were gone, leaving the fields bright with moonlight. Faint music caught his ears and he spied several globes of light in the distance. Will-o’-the-wisp? He didn’t know, but the haunting melody tugged at his heart and he walked toward it, careful of his footing.

Callum's Fate 3D Cover

It was caution that saved him before he made the fatal mistake of stepping into the faery ring that suddenly appeared at his feet. He might have become lost in their dark realm. He stared down, delighted with the brightly dressed wee folk fluttering and dancing in the circle of mushrooms. Laughter floated up to him and he smiled reflexively. Several of the pretty creatures spied him and flittered up to tug at his clothing with tiny hands. These were male, scantily dressed, and one saucy lad winked a bright eye and flew up to nibble at his lips.

Callum laughed and shooed them gently off. “I’m not fool enough to join you,” he told the three hovering near his face.

Check it out. I've been lucky enough to receive an ARC of this one. I had hoped to have it read and reviewed by release day but that seems very unlikely. I will say I'm really enjoying what I've read (about half way through. Can't wait to find more hours in my day to finish.)

Book Trailer

Excerpt

Joel Riley was a difficult captain to work under, and for his first season in the Deep, Sean was pretty sure he despised the man. But another season in he’d grown accustomed to the captain’s volatile temper and inability to compromise. Joel had been a miner all his life, born on Titan to a family of miners. He had the sea in his veins and Ariel was his heart. There was a confidence to Joel that drew the crew to him and an arrogance that kept him slightly out of reach. Rugged, strong, and built for hard labor, he was the exact opposite of Sean—and yet of all the crew, Sean felt closest to Joel. Sean understood the captain’s approach, his passions, and he trusted the older man with his life.

“Captain, is everything all right?” Sean said from the entrance.

Joel jumped, knocking his knees on the control board. “Jesus, boy! What you doing creeping around in the middle of the night?”

“I wasn’t creeping,” Sean said.

“Skulking around, spying on people, and you reckon that’s not creeping,” Joel grumbled.

Deep Cover

Sean thought better of continuing into an argument. If Joel’s mood was testy they were going to go around in circles annoying each other.

“I was about to turn in,” Sean said, deciding it was best to be passive.

“You looking for permission?” Joel’s tone was still curt, but it wasn’t really directed at Sean. Something else was bothering him.

“No, I just thought I’d come in and say good night.”

Joel sighed, apparently appeased by the lack of confrontation. He gave Sean a weak, tired smile. “Better get some rest, Doc. Couple of hours and Harvey will need you to stitch something, no doubt.”

Wasn’t that the truth. Harvey, their engineer, was pretty good when it came to mineral mining and keeping the ship moving, but he could injure himself getting into his dive suit.

“What about you, Sir?”

“I’m not planning on cutting anything,” Joel said, his smile strengthening.

“I meant are you turning in?”

Joel hesitated. Usually the captain was impossible to read, but every so often Sean got hints of the man behind the muscle. There was a softness to him, hidden behind the square jaw and piercing eyes. Sean had always been drawn to his vulnerable side. It crept in from time to time, reminding Sean that the captain, despite liking to pretend he was a demigod, was just a man. A good man.

“Not yet.” A shadow seemed to be hanging over him.

“Would you mind some company?” Sean offered, sensing the captain had something he needed to get off his chest.

“Suit yourself.” It was as close to an invitation as Joel ever gave anyone.

All of a sudden, I was yanked to the side, and before I realized what was going on, my hands were locked around his waist and my face buried in the crook of his neck while he hugged me fiercely.

Oh, shit! I held my breath for as long as I could, but then my lungs won the fight. His scent hit me, causing me to whimper and shudder, and making my cock painfully hard.

“I know you always wanted to get out of here and you’re trying so hard to stay away. Showing you still love us won’t trap you in this town, little brother.”

Trevor had it all so wrong. He thought it was the town and life here that I was running away from. It wasn’t though; I was running from my twisted, perverted self. The more I stuck around him, the more I justified my urges. We weren’t related, not really. There was no blood connection. I was not a monster for loving him. It was all bullshit though. Not only had we been raised as siblings, Trevor had never shown any such interest in me. So the farther away I was, the less inclined I became to break down and tell him what I wanted. What I’d always wanted. What would be the point of that? I knew he’d reject me. I’d be selfish and force him to completely lose his little brother.

Br0th3rly 3D Cover

Despite the steady coaching, my body refused to comply, and I clung to him, breathing hard and almost bursting into tears. He pushed me back and searched my face. The deep frown that twisted his took nothing away from his beauty.

“Tristan, what’s wrong with you? You’re a mess, bro.”

The raw concern in his voice stabbed me like a burning knife, twisting my gut and making my heart bleed. “Sorry, Trev. Forget it, please. I’ve been under a truckload of pressure at work.”

He nodded and pulled me back into the hug, and shame exploded inside of me, promptly followed by a lust so savage I thought my starved cock would burst through my underwear and jeans.

A loud honk finally broke the spell, making me jump so hard I hit my head on the car roof. Trevor laughed and shook his head, probably thinking I was as clumsy and goofy as ever. What he didn’t know was that those traits were part of me only when I was around him. My sick obsession with him took too much energy and brain power, not to mention blood flow. There wasn’t much left to take in my surroundings and coordinate my movements.
