Getting ready for my vacation (which technically I should have canceled because the new hire declined the contract so we need to find a replacement ASAP but I'm not going to do it as I canceled once already for all of this).

Have more of Conned. Last week we met Sion, the elf prince, getting ready for the anime con. Meet Roy, homicide detective and uber geek who's going to the con without his usual companion, his partner at work. He's in the dealer's room shopping for crap he doesn't need but desperately wants.

A teen dressed up out of Naruto shrieked. “Can I have a picture?”

It took Roy a moment to realize she meant him. He turned to see who the other half of the ‘two’ might be and found himself gazing down into the eyes of an Edwin Silverleaf cosplayer holding a Crossed Swords figurine. Wow, his eyes are amazing. The contacts are even the right shade of amber. Those slit-pupiled eyes blinked then ‘Edwin’ smiled.

Sorry I didn't get to everyone's last week. It was an insanely busy week interviewing new faculty and mentally exhausted in the evenings. I hope to do better this week.

I rather missed the release of one of my short stories so I'm going to take a break from These Haunted Hills to showcase the new story, Conned

Snippet (it's a sentence too long as I didn't want to give the wrong impression as to who's talking to Sion)- Sion took a last look at his reflection. It hadn’t taken much magic to change his appearance to take on Edwin Silverleaf aspects. He didn’t even have to mask the sweep of his pointed ears.
“I’m sure you’re beautiful. Let’s get moving, you peacock,” a masculine voice called from the other room.
Sion huffed as he walked into the hotel suite’s living room. His son, Ioan, was dressed like a Catholic priest, a cane in his hand. Bishop from Dogs: Bullets and Carnage was a natural choice for Ioan, a blind man cosplaying a blind manga character.

Blurb Detective Roy Connolly never expected to find real elves and murder at his local anime convention.

Seeking a bonding experience with his formerly estranged son, Sion, a crown prince of the elves, takes him to something they both enjoy: a human anime convention. They both like humans and all their geeky creations so Sion anticipates an enjoyable weekend. He never expected an enemy assassin, armed with only a description of Sion's cosplay, to start murdering his way through the convention.

Detective Roy Connolly, a closet geek, heads to the same anime con without his friend, Amelia. He's surprised to find one of the most handsome men he's ever seen cosplaying in the same anime style as his own, and even more delighted that Sion can't keep his hands off him. Throwing caution to the wind, Roy jumps into a whirlwind relationship only to find himself in the cross hairs of an assassin.

Another weekend, another few days of running around, back to Ohio for a week. Back to These Haunted Hills. I'm finishing up the scene with Cassia and Josh discussing Brendan. Last week Cass told Josh to display himself seductively against a tree. Here's his response:

“Shut it! I’m sure he’s not looking for anyone new. Besides, no trees. I’m not getting splinters in my ass or ticks for that matter.”

“And on that note, I’ll let you get to sleep and those dreams I’m sure you can’t wait to have about the lovely, talented Mr. Halloran.”

“Goodbye, Cass.”

Josh hoped she was right about those dreams.

Running behind due to work and holidays. I finally submitted something this week (a Christmas story) which is the first thing in a long time I've submitted. Pretty depressing.

This is still from These Haunted HIlls. Josh and his friend Cassia are talking taking Brendan ghost hunting. The hotel he mentions is sort of a H.H. Holmes sort of place only a bit smaller.

"I’ll see if he’s okay with you coming out to the hotel at least once because it’ll be more than just one visit to cover that place well, I mean, it’s not big but I’m sure he’ll want to take his time since that’s the crux of his new novel.”

“Did he tell you anything about it?”

“He said he would when it gels more.”

“Damn, so exciting.”

“I know. I’ve been buzzing all day. I think I outed myself in five seconds flat. I could have died.”

She snorted. “You should have just splayed yourself out on a fallen tree or found an alternative use for that waterfall. Make sure he gets the message.”

I'm traveling back to PA again (I'm running all over this summer) so hopefully I won't be too late on reading everyone's stuff.

I'm continuing with These Haunted Hills. We left off with Josh talking to his partner and best friend Cassia about meeting Brendan. I've skipped to the part where Josh tells her they're going to take Brendan ghost hunting on the condition neither of them can geek out over Brendan being who he is.

“If I can spend the night ghost hunting with freaking B.A. Halloran and all I have to do is rein in the geek, consider it done. This is so exciting.”

“That also means we can’t blog about it or any of that. Maybe, if this goes well, we can at least get pictures with him. I don’t want to overwhelm him because seriously you can tell he’s fighting the black monster.”

Cassia hummed into the phone. They’d grown up together and Josh had weathered many storms with her clinical depression. If anyone knew the mire Brendan was in, it was her. “Can’t blame him there. Tell you what, I’ll pick out a great place to explore, how’s that?”

Sorry I'm running a little late. It was my 50th birthday today so I was out and running around. I'm a little stunned at being half a century old....

This is still These Haunted Hills. Josh and Brendan have parted ways and Josh is calling Cassia, his friend and ghost hunting partner.

“Is it really him?” she asked before he even got the chance to say hello.

“It is! Oh my god, Cass, it was all I could do to keep from jumping around like a little kid and falling in the creek.”

“What’s he like? Can I meet him?”

“He’s quiet, a little sad actually.” Joshua paused, yes sad was right. Sad mixed with a hint of desperate but he didn’t want to think about that.

I spent this week working on a new (and boring) class for this fall (Epidemiology is not my jam but since I'm the only medical doctor at the university I was tagged to do it). I'm looking forward to reading everyone's snippets to get my brain out of the doldrums.

I'm continuing right where I left off (and again a bit longer than it should be for a cohesive thought, sorry. I'll behave soon, promise). Brendan has found Josh's fan art but it's made him think of his dead son, Connor.

Brendan shut the journal brushing his hand over his eyes. “You don’t have to say anything.”

“But I am sorry. No one should have to go through this. Children shouldn’t have to face a monster like cancer but I will shut up about it now. I’m afraid of saying the wrong thing but is saying nothing worse? God, I’m babbling again. It’s just...I think the silence and avoidance makes it seem Ike everything about you is broken.”

God, why had he said that? He should have stopped at I’ll shut up now but Brendan didn’t seem angry. He regarded Joshua intently.

“You’re not wrong. I know a lot of my friends felt that way. Eventually many of them drifted off, like they couldn’t build a bridge to me and Kirsten and our pain. It’s all right. I don’t want to go through my life never talking about Connor. I just can’t promise I won’t cry.”

Sorry everyone, still trying to catch up with last week's. Hopefully this week will be less insane as I'm no longer out on a convention.

This one is slightly longer by a few sentences so forgive me but it needed it to make sense. Brendan and Josh are in his vehicle leaving the Ridges and Brendan has found Josh's sketch book and has been looking at the wildlife drawings he's done when he comes across something else.

“And this one is amazing.” Brendan held up the sketch of his character, John Archer, done with John running through the woods.

Joshua’s face went redder than the stop light he braked for. “God, I forgot it was in there!”

“It’s not like you haven’t already outed yourself as a geek a dozen times over.” Brendan chuckled. “I think it’s a great piece of fan art.”

Joshua’s blush spread as his heart jitterbugged. “Thanks.”

“John was Connor’s favorite character. He would have loved this.” Brendan’s voice broke.

Joshua glanced over and saw the tears forming in Brendan’s eyes. “I am so sorry. I don’t really know what to say because nothing I could say would help.”

Still using my dreamwidth because my webmaster was gone last week and I'm at a convention in Salt Lake City this week (I got to hear a lecture by a Nobel Prize winner! How awesome is that?)

Continuing with These Haunted Hills with a very unromantic snippet I'm afraid. they're talking about the Ridges insane asylum.

Since I'm traveling I can't share a picture of the windows they're talking about but you can read up on the Ridges here if you want.

Joshua led Brendan closer to the building before pointing up to the window. Iron scroll work in pretty spiral patterns covered them. “Like I said, Dr. Kirkbride wanted the asylum to be pretty, less like a grim jail. So instead of iron bars, he made it into decorative metalworking hoping it would help lift their spirits.”

“It is pretty though I’m betting it didn’t help much.”

“Doubtful, especially when you know countless icepick lobotomies happened in this place.”

“Chilling.”

Running late as I was traveling across three states today. And now my laptop can't access my wordpress blog (and the reset password link isn't working so my dreamwidth account it is)

Still working on These Haunted HIlls I've dragged some ghost hunting books on my area along with me on the trip. Fun research! Speaking of research I did skip over Josh telling Brendan about the history of the hospital though it did lead into them talking about Brendan coming out to his fans which is where the snippet picks up.

“I can’t imagine coming out to an audience of millions.” Joshua rubbed his arms, chasing away a sudden chill. “Hell, it took me three years to come out to my parents.”

“Were they okay with it, if that’s not prying?”

Joshua wave him off as he topped the curb, leaving grass behind for the cracked asphalt of the parking lot. “They heard me angsting about it on the phone with Travis. I woke up the next day to find a new starship Enterprise on the kitchen table with a note from Dad saying they’ve known for some time I was gay, that they loved me, and that they thought Travis, my boyfriend at the time, was cute. My parents are pretty awesome.”

I know I owe comments from last week. My internet has been hooking up at .09 mbps so welcome 1998. I can't load much of anything. I'm back up to a full .6 mbps today (when it's actually on) so hopefully I can do better! (But no accompanying picture today because there's no prayer of even loading the page let alone uploading anything).

I'm still working with These Haunted Hills. I've skipped ahead just a little to the next chapter where Joshua takes Brendan to the Ridges (the Athens Lunatic Asylum) to talk ghosts. It's a tad over six sentences (I think it's 8, just like last week.) This time they're out of the graveyard and going up to the asylum itself.

"We have a vague pentagram of cemeteries in Athens. You might want to Goggle the spiritualist movement origins of the city. I could take you up to the weeping angel statue, right up from that coffee shop we were in, but she’s not the cool Dr. Who kind of angel.”

Brendan chuckled. “You are such a geek.”

“As advertised.” Joshua thumped his chest.

“I’ll be happy she’s not a Whovian angel. I’m not up for quantum locked villains on our first day.”

“I’m definitely not the only geek climbing this hill.”

“No, you are not.” Brendan shielded his eyes against the afternoon sun. “This place is huge. I can’t imagine being locked up here.”

Missed last week because I was at the steampunk symposium in a hotel with the world's most unreliable internet and then went right into finals week so I wouldn't have had time to read anyone's. Technically I'm at graduation today but I'll have the rest of the week to read.

I'm still working with These Haunted Hills. I've skipped ahead just a little to the next chapter where Joshua takes Brendan to the Ridges (the Athens Lunatic Asylum) to talk ghosts. It's a tad over six sentences (I think it's 8)

Brendan stared at his feet, toes near a cracked, small boxy headstone bearing only a number. “They didn’t even give them names, not even in death.”

Joshua swallowed hard. He hadn’t planned to bring Brendan to the Ridges’s cemetery when he drove the man up to the old asylum. He didn’t want to stir up shit memories for the man. Coffee at the Donkey cafe had gone well. Brendan didn’t fuss at all as Joshua helped him put the sites he most wanted to see in a logical order for them to attack them. Better yet, once he’d settled down and realized Joshua truly wasn’t going to fanboy all over him, Brendan chatted with him like they’d been buddies for years. He didn’t want to lose that. “No, there are records somewhere with the names but no one came to claim these poor people.”

This is from the above mentioned graveyard. You can see the numbered headstone in the back (though Margaret's family at least gave her a named stone too). I pulled the freaking corn out of the grave before I left her.

Still continuing with These Haunted Hills. And happy Earth Day!

The snippet begins with Brendan laying out his plans for his ghost hunting trip.

“I had more thoughts on what I’d mot like to see beside Crooked Pines. You can decide how best to tackle them and if it’s worth trying.”

“Sure. Actually, if you want, we can drive into Athens. I can show you the Ridges which is a must-see and we can grab lunch or a coffee and sit down with your list.”

“That sounds good. Have to admit, I’m a night owl. When you said to meet here so early I was aghast,” Brendan chuckled.

Joshua snorted. “Not my idea either. Blame the scout masters.

Here is a shot of an upcoming scene where they're at the Ridges cemetery (yes these are tombstones for the patients of the Ridges (actual name Athens Lunatic Asylum)). They are unmarked except for a number which in theory matches up with a name in the files.

Still continuing with These Haunted Hills, still not writing nearly enough for Camp Nano. Sigh. This picks up after Brendan shows disbelief that the ghost haunting the cave is that of a 1920s lady (and that is the real haunting ascribed to the area and Joshua's answer below is about as best we have as far as answers are concerned. (and sorry I think it's 8 sentences today, is bad).

“I agree though this was a popular place at the turn of the century with various lodges and small hotels in the region like the one we’ll investigate. There was even a small town near here but it's long gone. While many night time hikes have reported seeing the lady, even ones not here specifically to ghost hunt, I’ve not see her nor have I found any records of anyone dying here.”

“Do you always look into the records for the haunted you investigative?”

“Yes, I’m first and foremost a scientist. I like collaborating evidence. Here at Ash Cave the best I can do is say it’s highly likely to have seen some death, but none I can document. I do have some evps I can let you hear.”

Brendan straightened, eyes bright. “Really? I’d love that.”

Here's a little proof of the long term activity in the area. Some of these date back to the early 1800s but the one here is turn of the last century. For some reason we feel the need to carve our names into everything.

Still continuing with These Haunted Hills which I've not been having as much time for in Camp Nano as I would like (both camp and nano end up in the all-time worst months for professors). It picks up where we left off last week where Josh outs himself to Brendan (almost immediately and much to his chagrin. Well he IS nervous about meeting one of his idols).

Glossing over my runaway mouth, back to Ash cave which got its name for all the mounds of ash found here, we think it was from the long term use by the Native Americans, probably the Shawnee or Wyandotte. But it was used by White settlers, too and even as a pulpit. So there is some interesting history here.”

“Is the haunting one of the Shawnee?”

“There have been a few evps that might suggest that but the ghost most commonly seen here is a woman who looks like she’s from the 1920s.”

‘Really? A lady in twenties garb?”

And here, Ash cave from the far rim. photo DSCN0082_zpsfq1vt3em.jpg

I think I still owe some comments from last week. Sigh. It's the last month of the semester which always turns into insanity and Camp Nano starts today! I will be working on this story for it (in part, I have two projects).

I'm sticking with These Haunted Hills and Brendan has just asked Josh to tell him about Ash Cave. It's slightly over 6 sentences but they're short and I wanted it to make sense....

"The cave is about seven hundred feet long and about a hundred deep. The waterfall cascading around us is from the east fork of Queer Creek.”

Brendan arched one of his eyebrows. “Really?”

Joshua shrugged. “Didn’t name it and I’m sure it means the strange sort of queer, not the me kind.” His face flamed. “Did I say that out loud?”

“You did.”

And here you go, Queer Creek spilling over the rim of Ash Cave.

Doing this on the fly today, just back from the Ohio Academy of Science: Science Fair (as a judge) and zooming off to a friend's play.

I'm sticking with These Haunted Hills This takes place directly after Brendan got a little uptight about being fan boyed over and Joshua assured him there would be no overt fanboying.

Tension relaxed in Brendan’s bearded jaw. “Thanks. I would love to go on a ghost hunt if you can arrange that.”

“Definitely. We can take you to a couple of places, the Moonville tunnel and of course the Crooked Pine hotel because that’s where we’ll be concentrating our efforts. I think it’s perfect for what you’re describing as the plot of your novel.”

“Excellent. So tell me more about Ash Cave.”

And here is inside the Moonville tunnel, some 'street art' of one of the ghosts that supposedly haunts the tunnel (she was killed by the train that ran thru the tunnel. I took this one on my own ghost hunt here. BTW, the hotel which will end up the haunted focus of the story, however, doesn't exist in the real world).

I'm continuing with These Haunted Hills. This is picking up where last week left off with the bit of tension as Brendan realizes Josh is one of his fan boys. Also Josh's ghost hunting partner is in need of a name which is why she's still just () in the text!

"I was thinking that after this we can go somewhere, maybe grab something to eat or drink and go over possible places and the best way to go about viewing them. Also if you want to go on a ghost hunt with me and my team mate, that can be arranged but I warn you, () is a fan girl too. She’ll behave herself though.”

“I’ll hold you to that.”

The mirthless quality to those words created a shiver along Joshua’s skin

I'm continuing with These Haunted Hills. I skipped a little bit here where Brendan realizes Joshua has recognized him and Joshua was telling him his students were around (Mostly because I need to ask my friend who is the naturalist there if students are allowed to do research in this area. I might have to change that part). It's slightly over 6 sentences but they're short and I wanted it to make sense. It begins just after Joshua being nervous that he's upset Brendan because he's recognized him.

“I’m used to being recognized. You haven’t acted like an obnoxious fan boy who thinks he owns me so we’re good.” Brendan’s gaze swept over Josh, lines tightening around his eyes. “Are you though?”

“What? A fan boy? Yes actually.” Josh smiled. He wasn’t going to lie to his man. “I love your books but you hired me and I owe it to you be professional.

As I'm rushing about to leave on Spring Break (Really? ALREADY?) I won't be putting up any pictures of the Haunted Hocking Hills this time and I probably won't get to anyone's post until much later (heck this might be late depending on when the thread goes up). I'm continuing this right from where it left off last time with Brendan and Joshua getting introduced to each other.

“Dr. Zimmerman?”

Joshua already knew Halloran had one of those deep James Earl Jones voices but hearing it here when it was just them and not a crowd of fans made Josh’s knees go wobbly. Joshua held out his hand. “Mr. Halloran. I’m glad you found your way out here.”

His lips twitched slightly, almost smiling as he shook hands. “The trail is paved the whole way so even a city dweller like me won’t get lost.” He turned to look at the water rushing over the lip of the fall. “It’s quite beautiful. It’s hard to believe this much wilderness exists to close to Columbus. It’s little more than an hour from where I live, and yet I was barely aware this was here.”
